An Insider’s Guide to Hiring a Consultant

Knowing how to select and work with consultants is an important skill. This article provides valuable insights from an experienced consultant about the process of obtaining consulting services.

Consultants serve as important resources for businesses because they have specialized knowledge and experience. In addition to technical qualifications, a consultant must have excellent business skills. However, evaluating the technical attributes of consultants is often much easier than determining their consulting and business competency.

Typically, a manager will make the decision to start a search for a consultant. Finding prospective consultants can be challenging because many consultants work based on referrals. Some obvious sources include LinkedIn and authors of recent peer-reviewed technical publications. Other sources are less obvious: equipment manufacturers, chemical vendors, and service suppliers who attend trade shows and technical conferences and have many connections.
