Extending the Reach of Modularization and Process Intensification

Special Section
April

Not that long ago, the ideas of modular processes and process intensification (PI), and their combination as modular chemical process intensification (MCPI), were familiar only to a small subset of chemical engineers mostly working in the fine chemicals industry. In the past few years, these concepts have grown in their reach and applications, well beyond those initial areas of emphasis, and have been applied to most sectors in the process industries. The RAPID Manufacturing Institute® lays claim to some amount of this success and promotion, owing to the collaboration of our expanding community of members.

In this special section of CEP on Process Intensification, we are proud to share four new applications of MCPI outside the original area of emphasis. The breadth of MCPI applications in the process industries is remarkable, with these four examples ranging from a large commodity chemical to pulp and paper, and renewable feedstocks to nuclear power generation...
