The capacity of a distillation column is the upper limit of operation, which depends on criteria such as acceptable operability, pressure drop, maximum useful efficiency, and flood point. Flood point is the initiation of flood. During flood, the column becomes hydraulically limited, which is primarily characterized by an increase in pressure drop and buildup of liquid at the top of a section of packing or trays.
