The production of natural gas from shale is subject to environmental regulations, including a combination of requirements already followed by conventional gas developers, plus new ones specific to shale gas.

Environmental issues associated with shale gas development are regulated primarily by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as by state agencies to which the EPA has delegated authority. Shale gas development is a segment of the oil and natural gas industry.
