Rising Star Virtual Workshop
On June 23rd, AIChE held its third annual Rising Star workshop and its first virtual workshop with over 65 attendees! AIChE welcomed exceptionally talented women from industry and academia across the country. The inaugural virtual workshop was a huge success, increasing the accessibility of the program to a substantially broader group of women.
In welcoming the Rising Star participants, June Wispelwey, AIChE Executive Director and CEO, remarked on industry’s and AIChE’s commitment to retain and advance women within the profession, through its All of Good: Engineering for Inclusion initiative, a core priority of the Doing a World of Good campaign.
Susan Dunlap, an executive coach and communications trainer, returned to present best practices for women to counteract perceptions and mitigate stereotypes. Throughout the workshop, participants developed skills for communicating with an authentic presence to effectively meet and network in the work place and beyond - exploring the dynamics of gender communication norms and stereotypes. They also learned how Confidence, Courage, Self-Advocacy, and Presence can differ by gender and the potential to impact career progression in the workplace.
The Rising Star workshop featured an executive panel discussion with leaders from industry and academia who offered advice on finding your authentic voice, navigating workplace hierarchies, and communicating effectively. Our distinguished panel was moderated by Susan Dunlap and included these executive leaders; Christine Bryant, Covestro, Senior Vice President; Delia Contreras, Honeywell, VP Engineering & Functional Excellence; Christine Grant, North Carolina State, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Associate Dean of Faculty; and Cynthia Murphy-Ortega, Chevron, Manager, University Partnerships, and Association Relations We thank these leaders for their commitment to the advancement of women within the profession.
AIChE plans to host two more virtual Rising Star workshops this year; one in mid- September and the other in December.
