Inspiring the Next Generation of Extraordinary

Fourth and eighth grade students met the Ohio State University AIChE - Dow K-12 STEM Ambassadors last week and learned via interactive science demonstrations about the excitement and opportunities of STEM!

Ten AIChE student chapter members recently became active K-12 STEM Ambassadors following a rigorous online training hosted by AIChE Academy and former Dow employee, Larry Sernyk, covering how to prepare and demonstrate science experiments, classroom learning outcomes and collaborative learning styles.

It gives the students a personal perspective by meeting the undergrads and brings STEM into traditionally underserved populations. - Dan Coombs

The program, in partnership with Dow, and funded by Dan and Ellen Coombs, was piloted in the Edison Intermediate / Larry Larson Middle School, Columbus OH.

“Weekly, on Friday afternoons, we are able to introduce fourth and eighth graders to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math, learn about the various careers open to STEM majors and conduct hands-on experiments. It’s awesome to see the excitement and know that we’re impacting young minds”, said Elizabeth Ostadali and Zac Gemmer, OSU’s student chapter co-leads.

“Ellen and I are delighted to support the launch of the AIChE K-12 STEM Ambassador program at our alma mater. It gives the students a personal perspective by meeting the undergrads and brings STEM into traditionally underserved populations”, added Dan Coombs, Foundation Trustee.

Every gift to the AIChE Foundation does a world of good.
