FOSSI Makes Hundreds of Dreams Come True
On October 7th, HBCU Week Foundation hosted its first HBCU Week College Fair in partnership with The Walt Disney Company in Orlando, Florida. In conjunction with events at Disney, the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) Founding Partners announced a major milestone: the program has raised funding for 550 scholarships at an investment approaching $30MM–more than halfway towards meeting its goal of supporting 1,000 scholars through 2025!

FOSSI Chairman Mark Vergnano, former CEO of The Chemours Company, commended the program, saying, “Never before has our industry come together to make such a significant, meaningful impact on the lives of historically under-represented students. At the College Fair, representatives from 50+ HBCUs and close to 9,000 high school students gathered for an exciting day of activities, with dozens of booths to visit, the chance for on-the-spot scholarships, and dazzling performances by the Winston-Salem State University and Delaware State University bands.
FOSSI also had a significant presence, with a mega-booth staffed by volunteers from 15 FOSSI sponsor companies and 3 Lunch & Learn sessions highlighting “The Superpowers of a STEM Degree.”
Representatives from Chemours, Cabot, BASF, ExxonMobil, ACC, and AIChE participated in the Lunch & Learn discussions, including AIChE’s President, Dr. Christine Grant. Panelists explained how a STEM degree teaches skills that translate into a wide range of career choices and highlighted the abundance of high-paying jobs in the chemical industry, with over a million more jobs expected to be added by 2030.
