The Bells are Ringing on Wall Street…for our FOSSI Scholars!

Walking through the NYSE was surreal and seeing myself on that screen made me feel so accomplished. I also loved the Gala; it was truly inspiring to hear about the honorees and their contributions to chemical engineering. It motivated me to push myself harder academically. — Chelsea Minard, 2022 FOSSI Scholar, Bowie State University

On Thursday, December 7th, thirteen FOSSI scholars got the thrill of a lifetime when they were asked to help ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

FOSSI Scholars Nahla Abdul-Hadi, Kendall Cousins, Dieunette Adusei-Peasah, Chelsea Minard, Ambrose Kee, Elijah Lewis, Kendall Taylor, Zachary McCray, Elissa Johnson, Nyla Baxter, Amira Hamilton, Josiah Moore and Winter Jones accompanied Darlene Schuster (Executive Director & CEO, AIChE) and John Sampson (Senior Vice President, Operations, Manufacturing and Engineering, Dow) on the NYSE bell podium as they counted down to the market close–on live television!

In the evening, scholars joined their FOSSI sponsors AdvanSix, BASF, Dow and Lubrizol at the 2023 AIChE Gala, where FOSSI Advisory Board Chair Jim Fitterling asked the scholars to stand and spoke about the profound impact of FOSSI and the energy and new perspectives that these outstanding students are already bringing to the industry.

Commented Chelsea Minard, "Walking through the NYSE was surreal and seeing myself on that screen made me feel so accomplished. I also loved the Gala; it was truly inspiring to hear about the honorees and their contributions to chemical engineering. It motivated me to push myself harder academically.”

Other scholars described the day as “remarkable,” “amazing,” and “unforgettable” and were grateful not only to visit the Big Apple and meet industry leaders, but also to meet each other.
