Alabama School of Mathematics & Science Welcomes Evonik to Explore a Career in STEM

In early May, Chris Gilbert, Head of Process Technology & Engineering at Evonik, along with Shai Yutuc and Cory Vernon, hosted a Lunch & Learn to talk about chemical engineering with students at The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, a state boarding school for the top STEM students in Alabama.

Chris first became aware of AIChE and its Foundation’s work to advance parity in the profession as a member of the Industry Leaders Forum, and Evonik became one of the early corporate donors in support of the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI). “To address society’s challenges, we need to open the doors of opportunity to all who aspire to be ChEs. Today’s session started the conversation”, said Chris Gilbert.

An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 25 students were treated to pizza and participated in a wide-ranging discussion about the exciting and lucrative opportunities in chemical industry. To Chris’ surprise, many students were familiar with chemical engineering, and wanted to hear more about growth fields, including the importance of sustainability to the industry.

Chris, Shai and Cory also shared information about FOSSI and strongly encouraged students to apply for the four-year, $40,000 scholarship when they become seniors.

Chris and his colleagues plan to return to the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science every year to attract the best and the brightest into our profession. They understand that whether Evonik or another organization hires these outstanding young engineers, the industry will gain much-needed talent and ingenuity.
