AIChE K–12 STEM Showcase

The inaugural AIChE K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Outreach Competition was held during the 2019 Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. AIChE K-12 Committee organized the competition. In attendance were local Floridian grade school students, parents, educators, AIChE volunteers and student members. More than 50 students, ages 6-10, had the opportunity to interact with tabletop demonstrations created by AIChE members, focusing on topics ranging from fluorescent polymers to water remediation to power generation.

AIChE student chapter teams and teams of member professionals submitted over 25 proposed modules. Volunteer judges reviewed the modules for originality, technical content, safety and accessibility for classroom use.

The K-12 STEM Outreach Competition was part of the AIChE K-12 STEM Showcase, which featured a keynote address by Cristina Thomas, Senior Technical Leader, 3M on the topic of STEM and chemical engineering. The students interacted with the competition modules and attended AIChE’s annual undergraduate Chem-E-Car Competition®. Overall, the day was full of hands-on demonstrations, experiments and discussions with AIChE volunteers.

The showcase was generously supported by the AIChE Foundation's Doing a World of Good Campaign.
