Meet the 2022 WISE Interns

AIChE 2022 WISE Interns Abbey Kollar and Kevin Donnelly
AIChE 2022 WISE Interns Abbey Kollar and Kevin Donnelly

The WISE (Washington Internships for Students of Engineering) program offers students across engineering disciplines the opportunity to explore the interface between engineering and public policy.

AIChE’s WISE representatives this year were Abbey Kollar (Penn State University) and Kevin Donnelly (West Virginia University). Both of these undergraduates spent the summer interacting with public policy makers and learning how engineers can work with the government to solve social problems. During their two months in Washington, they each prepared papers on public policy issues. Donnelly examined energy storage regulations that support renewable energy, and Kollar researched the reduction of fertilizer-related nitrous oxide emissions.

AIChE’s WISE interns will present their policy papers later this year at the Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ, during a session devoted to Chemical Engineering Policy and WISE. The session is scheduled for November 14, 2022, from 1:30pm – 3:00pm at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Interested in becoming a WISE intern?

Participants in the WISE Internship program often find the experience extremely rewarding and value the opportunity to learn how to create a public policy paper, advocate for legislation, and build a network of contacts that frequently result in future undertakings.

If you or someone you know would enjoy taking part in this special learning opportunity, AIChE will be sending representatives again next year. The 2023 WISE Internship program will run from June 4, 2023 – August 4, 2023, and interns will be housed in George Washington University dorms. Applications for the WISE Internship will be accepted starting October 1, 2022. The deadline for 2023 WISE Internship applications is Jan. 15, 2023. For details, visit www.wise-intern.org.

Interested in becoming a Faculty-Member-in Residence (FMR) for the WISE program?

An outstanding faculty member or policy professional (Faculty-Member-in Residence “FMR”) is needed to mentor and teach engineering students about the interaction between science, technology, and policymaking during the 2023 WISE Program in Washington, DC, from June 4 - August 5.
