Jérôme Taveau is a Senior Consultant at the Jensen Hughes and the GCPS chair at the 2022 AIChE Spring Meeting & 18th Global Congress on Process Safety taking place in San Antonio, TX, on April 10–14, 2022. We recently caught up with Jérôme to find out what we can expect at this year’s conference.
What is your role for the 2022 AIChE Spring Meeting & 18th Global Congress on Process Safety?
After the last two editions of the Global Congress on Process Safety being held online, we are very excited to come back to the beautiful city of San Antonio for an in-person format!
This year I am chairing the 18th Global Congress on Process Safety, which comprises five tracks: the 56th Loss Prevention Symposium, the 24th Process Plant Safety Symposium, the 37th Center for Chemical Process Safety International Conference, the 11th Process Safety Management Mentoring, and last but not least, Perspectives on Process Safety from Around the World.
Can you give us some insight into this year’s GCPS and what events shouldn’t be missed?
This year’s theme is “Transformation Beyond 2050: Sustainability and the Chemical Plant of the Future.” We will have a lot of new content, including sessions related to cybersecurity, new energy and risks, new safety technologies, along with more traditional sessions such as Facility Siting, Fires and Explosions, and Combustible Dusts, to name only a few.
I would particularly encourage new process safety engineers to attend the 11th Process Safety Management Mentoring, which has a lot of great content on process safety fundamentals.
On the other end, the 56th Loss Prevention Symposium always provides great expert knowledge on cutting-edge solutions and novel approaches to hazard identification and risk assessment.
I personally find the panel sessions very enlightening, and I am thinking about one example which is The Yoda Panel recently introduced in the Process Plant Safety Symposium. It’s a great opportunity to learn from experts in a less academic, more casual format. I should not forget the joint Case Histories session on Wednesday, which is always a very anticipated moment during GCPS and a great time to learn from past accidents and the ways to prevent them from happening again. I also encourage people to take advantage of the preconference short courses that are given on a variety of topics the Sunday before the congress kicks off.
What information are you hoping attendees walk away with?
Beyond just information, I think the goal of any attendee should be to learn two or three new things that can directly improve the safety of their daily job, and also connect with new people who share the same safety interests and can become “safety buddies.” Sharing our personal experiences, good and bad, is especially important to make the world safer.
