Sindia Rivera-Jiménez, Cynthia Murphy-Ortega, and Stephanie Farrell were recognized as the inaugural recipients of the IDEAL Star Award during the IDEAL Reception at the 2021 AIChE Annual Meeting in Boston, MA, in November. Only Dr. Rivera-Jiménez was present to receive her award in person.
The IDEAL Star Award, which is given out by the Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC), recognizes AIChE members who have created successful programming to progress the IDEAL path by creating engaging, inclusive content with an emphasis on learning about topics pertaining to inclusion, diversity, equity and/or anti-racism.
Dr. Sindia Rivera-Jiménez and Cynthia Murphy-Ortega: Unconscious Bias Workshop
Sindia Rivera-Jiménez and Cynthia Murphy-Ortega have created a workshop to focus on unconscious bias that is interactive, engaging, and encourages self-reflection. These workshops have been conducted multiple times over the past two years, a testament to their initial success and to vocal demand for additional offerings. This workshop addresses all aspects of the IDEAL path with a focus on learning and self-reflection in a safe atmosphere.
Dr Stephanie Farrell: LGBTQ+ Safe Zone Training

Dr. Farrell’s Safe Zone training workshops, which have multiple levels, are presented by AIChE in partnership with ASEE. This program provides an interactive way for participants to learn more about LGBTQ+ terms and concepts and teaches participants how to be a successful ally. Its success is made clear by the considerable number of participants and workshops that have been held over the past several years, due in large part to the work and dedication of Dr. Farrell.
