Meet Nathan Kastner — Featured Student for June

Where are you from?

Niantic, CT

What school do you go to? What year are you?

University of Connecticut Senior

Do you hold any positions in your AIChE chapter or with AIChE nationally?

Conference Chair for 2014 Northeast Regional Conference

Describe an event in your chapter that you are most proud to have been involved with.

Planning the Northeast Regional Conference and seeing our hard work pay off in April!

What are your plans after graduation? In what field are you most interested in having an impact?

I'll be working in R&D at a large consumer products company in Connecticut. I'd love to stay in the consumer product and beverage field to make products that help people enjoy life more fully.

How do you blow off steam and keep your sanity between classes, homework and projects?

Luckily for me, my ChE study group is comprised of some of my greatest friends. Even though we spend a lot of our time working, we can easily transition into having fun. This year we've been playing a lot of of Mario Party and Mario Kart. Trying out new and interesting IPAs is a great way to relax as well.

Which of your undergraduate classes have you most enjoyed?

Our first ChE class, Introduction to Chemical Engineering, was great! The class was definitely tough, but every lecture our professor started off with a recent news article about a new application of ChE. It was great to see how many options existed for us and helped me decide what I wanted to do after graduation.

What is the best kept secret on your campus?

You can get an entire rotisserie chicken at the Student Union Food Court for $6!

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?

I'm looking forward to having more time on the weekends to relax, and finally leaving all the problem sets and projects behind. I've been telling anyone that will listen that I want to make beer, so it's time to put my free time to use and start home-brewing.

What will you be most saddened to leave behind at school when you move on?

I'm going to miss all my friends! While a fair number of us are remaining in Connecticut, others are moving all over the country and I am really going to miss seeing them every day.

What is the most unexpected thing you have been asked in an interview?

One of my most recent interviews started off with "What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?" It caught me slightly off-guard but it was nice to see the interviewer had a sense of humor and put me at ease for the remainder of the interview.

Do you have any advice to incoming students and underclassmen ChEs around the world?

My only advice would be: study hard and avoid stress as much as possible. The curriculum is tough, but no test or quiz is going to change your life, so it's important to keep that perspective and just do your best.

What's your first thought when you wake up in the morning?

Usually it's "Ah! Did I oversleep?!"

How would you like to be involved with AIChE after graduation?

I would like to join the YPs and assist with undergraduate events You can contact Nathan through his LinkedIn profile.
