BASF is bringing battery materials to Canada

German chemical giant, BASF, just bought some land near Quebec, Canada, for a future 100,000 m.t./yr cathode active materials (CAMs) plant.

Some context. One of the most complex parts of a lithium-ion electrochemical cell (and the largest by volume) is the cathode. CAMs are a combination of lithium hydroxide (or lithium carbonate) with precursor metal oxide powders (PCAM).

Ok, so what’s going on here? BASF is planning to start up this CAM site in 2025 and they intend to eventually integrate it with PCAM manufacturing and a battery recycling facility. It’s not clear whether or not those sites will be co-located with this CAM site, but there is certainly enough land available...
