AIChE Journal Highlight: Transforming Pharmaceutical Process Development

imagesRising research and development (R&D) costs and complexity of drug candidates have rapidly changed the pharmaceutical industry over the past decade. Improved understanding of human biology has enabled identification of novel targets for disease-modifying therapies. However, high drug development costs, long timelines, and low success rates push companies to constantly re-evaluate their drug development strategies. Currently, introducing a new drug to market can cost upward of $2 billion (1). As a result, pharmaceutical companies are adopting several novel concepts in development and manufacturing to reduce costs and shorten time to market.

In the AIChE Journal Perspective article, “Positioning for a Sustainable Future — Role of Chemical Engineers in Transforming Pharmaceutical Process Development,” authors Shailendra Bordawekar et al. (AbbVie) discuss how enabling technologies are advancing pharmaceutical process development and describe examples of implementing these technologies.

Due to the depth and diversity of their skills, chemical engineers can make a remarkable impact across the entire drug development cycle in pharmaceutical R&D....
