Career Corner: Ace Your Skype or Phone Interview

If you are interviewing for a new job, there is a good chance that at least your first interview will be conducted by phone or using online videoconferencing software, such as Skype. These methods are both convenient and cost-effective for the hiring company. Remote interviewing also helps the interviewer see how well you can communicate virtually.

Phone and Skype interviews can be different from in-person interviews. During phone interviews, you cannot read the interviewer’s nonverbal body language and adjust your responses and behavior accordingly. When you interview via Skype, you need to worry about the lighting and background as much as your own appearance. Also, if your Internet connection is slow, the video feed may not align with the audio, which can cause awkward time lags during the interview.

As if that weren’t enough to worry about, “Skype interviewing can leave a lasting impression, more so than in-person interviews. Often employers record the interviews to compare your answers to those of other candidates.
