8:40AM-9:30AM: “E-Fuels as an Approach to Indirect Hydrogen Deployment”

Keynote Speaker: Trent Rogers, Engineer, Net-Zero Resources, Electric Power Research Institute

With the rapid expansion of green hydrogen production aimed at decarbonizing difficult-to-electrify industries, developing hydrogen-enabled infrastructure and end use applications is essential to realizing its full value. However, given hydrogen’s unique physiochemical profile, deploying new and retrofitting existing solutions necessary to utilize hydrogen can be both a costly and challenging transition.

As an intermediary approach to enable such an energy transition, hydrogen-derived e-fuels offer an attractive alternative. By coupling with sustainable carbon dioxide to produce e-fuels, green hydrogen utilization can be anchored via incumbent fuel markets while hydrogen markets become increasingly realized. This mechanism enables a more streamlined deployment of green hydrogen that is less dependent on immediate adoption of hydrogen utilization technologies while still decarbonizing difficult-to-electrify industries.

This discussion will highlight key e-fuel value chain perspectives and offer insight to the potential e-fuels have as a medium to indirectly deploy low-carbon hydrogen.
