Onshore and Offshore Wind Energy. Where are we going?

Wednesday, April 24, 2024,
8:00pm to 9:00pm
CDT
Virtual / Online

Abstract: The presentation will start from the basics of wind energy and wind turbine design. It will then build on that foundation to look at the important features of onshore wind farms. And finally, it will look at the unique features of offshore wind farms, and wind energy in grid systems. It will include aspects of the wind itself, wind turbine design, permitting and environmental concerns, transmission interconnections and where we are going – how much wind power will we need in a net-zero electric world and the role of renewables and storage in electric grids.

Bio: Tony Rogers has a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and has been doing wind-energy related research since 1988. He worked at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Wind Energy Center for a number of years, leading research projects, providing wind-energy-related services to the state and teaching grad students. He is the co-author of Wind Energy Explained, Theory, Design and Application, a graduate-level engineering text book. He also worked for a number of years for a global wind energy consulting company. He recently retired and is a climate activist in Massachusetts.
