Yusuf Adewuyi

Professor Chemical, Biological & Bio Engineering
Professor Yusuf G (“Debo”) Adewuyi earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from Ohio University (Cum Laude), and MS and PhD in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Iowa. He is a faculty in the Chemical, Biological and Bioengineering (CBBE) at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT), where for over two decades, he has mentored and trained minority and disadvantaged engineering students. Prior to joining NCAT in 1994, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Boston College (jointly with Aerodyne Research, Billerica, MA), and the University of Illinois in Urbana, and Senior Staff and Research Engineer at Mobil R & D Corporation (now ExxonMobil).
Adewuyi’s research focuses on emerging areas of energy and environment, including catalysis, environmental reaction engineering; sustainable chemistry and engineering, synthesis of nanoscale materials for energy and environmental applications; sonochemistry, cavitation engineering, and advanced oxidation processes for pollution control and remediation; chemistry and kinetics of NOx, SO2, Hg and CO2 removal; biofuel synthesis and biomass conversion; and fuels desulfurization. He has over 200 refereed journal publications, book chapters, proceedings and conference/other presentation papers; and 3 awarded patents. These papers are widely cited − approximately 3,500 (GS) and 2,400 (ISI) times with h-index of 30 and 26, respectively. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Agriculture-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Defense, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency. He is the 2014 NCAT Outstanding University Senior Researcher of the Year, a three-time Outstanding College of Engineering Senior Researcher of the Year, and a two-time Chemical Engineering Teacher of the Year Awardee. He is listed in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the 21st Century and the Dictionary of International Biography.
Professor Adewuyi has established a strong record of service at all levels. He is a Fellow of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and for decades, has provided outstanding service to the Minority Affairs Committee (MAC), having served as its Chair, first and second vice chair; and reviewed MAC Minority Scholarship Award Applications for several years. He is also the past President of the AIChE Triad Section and Secretary of the AIChE Environmental Division, and served on the Lawrence K. Cecil Award Committee. He has chaired and co-chaired conference sessions for AIChE, American Chemical Society, World Congress of Chemical Engineering, and other professional organizations. In recognition of his excellent leadership and dedication, he was honored with the AIChE MAC Eminent Engineer, the Distinguished Service and the Excellence and Service Awards. He serves as an editorial board member of three journals; has reviewed manuscript for over 65 reputed journals for several years, and research proposals for several national and international agencies, including the NSF, USDA, European Research Council and South African National Research Foundation. He was as a member of the Environmental Technology Delegation to China through the Citizen Ambassador Program in 1994.
