Nancy M. Haegel, PhD, is the Center Director for Materials Science at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). She leads an organization of ~200 staff, associates, and post-doctoral and graduate students, providing fundamental and applied materials science discovery and problem-solving for current and next-generation renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies. Haegel joined NREL in 2014, after ten years at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where she was a distinguished professor in the physics department. She has also been a faculty member at Univ. of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Fairfield Univ. and has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards. Her research interests are in electronic materials and devices, with emphasis on transport characterization, high resistivity semiconductors, and infrared imaging and detection, resulting in ~170 publications. She was the recipient of the 2004 American Physical Society (APS) Prize for Research at an Undergraduate Institution and a 2012 Fulbright Senior Scholar at Hebrew Univ. and is an APS Fellow. Haegel has a PhD in materials science and engineering from the Univ. of California at Berkeley.
