Michael Betenbaugh

Professor
Johns Hopkins University

Michael Betenbaugh, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Johns Hopkins University, is also lead PI of the nationally recognized Advanced Mammalian Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (AMBIC), a university / industry consortium for advancing mammalian cell biomanufacturing. Betenbaugh is one of the pioneers of eukaryotic metabolic engineering and has made multiple landmark contributions in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mammalian and insect production hosts, in fundamental discoveries in glycobiology, in applying systems biology to understand mammalian cells in biotechnology and biomedicine, and in advancing knowledge about sustainable algal bioprocessing for biofuels and other products. Among his most significant achievements are: the application of chaperones and foldases to increase protein folding and product yields; glycoengineering to produce sialylated high value glycoproteins; anti-apoptosis engineering to increase host cell survival and productivity; and advancing sustainable microalgae processing.

Betenbaugh earned his BS and PhD degrees in chemical engineering at the University of Virginia and the University of Delaware, respectively. He is recipient of the D.I.C. Wang Award for Excellence in Biochemical Engineering, the Marvin J. Johnson Award of ACS and the Cell Culture Engineering Award of ECI. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
