Kevin Whitty

Professor
The University of Utah

Prof. Whitty has over 20 years' experience in high temperature processing of fossil and renewable resources for production of power, heat, chemicals and fuels. His research focuses on gasification, syngas processing and chemical looping combustion. Prof. Whitty's laboratories span a range from fundamental fuel characterization with only a few milligrams of sample to pilot-scale systems for processing more than 1 ton per day of fuel.  Prof. Whitty’s research aims to support development of new technologies and to improve operation and understanding of existing technologies for conversion of coal, waste and biomass to power, chemicals and fuels.  In particular, he works with gasification, syngas processing and chemical looping combustion.  His laboratories include equipment for fundamental characterization of fuels, products and reactions, bench scale reactor systems for process development and pilot-scale systems that replicate the environment of full-scale systems.  He was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Professional Achievement Award for Innovations in Green Process Engineering based on his significant contributions in gasification, syngas processing and chemical looping combustion fields.
