Jim Pfaendtner

Prof. Jim Pfaendtner is the Steve and Connie Rogel Professor of Chemical Engineering and Professor Chemistry at the University of Washington. He also serves as Department Chair of Chemical Engineering and holds additional appointments as a Staff Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab and a Senior Data Science Fellow of the Washington eScience Institute. Jim is also a Senior Editor at the Journal of Physical Chemistry. Jim received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and was previously a research associate at University of Utah and ETH Zürich. He joined the faculty of Chemical Engineering at UW in 2009. Jim’s research program is broadly in the area of computational molecular science including applications in biomineralization, interfacial phenomena of biomolecules, biomimetic materials, reaction engineering, and applications of ML/AI to molecular design. Since 2016 Jim has been the PI and director of an NSF graduate training program at the nexus of molecular science and data science and helped to develop innovative training methods for chemical and materials graduate students to apply data science to their research.
